It's about people's reactions. Isn't it irritating? When you're so happy and satisfied that you got something you wanted and when you tell about it to someone you know, s/he just goes like, "Oh. I see." If it was something you worked hard for, it feels even worse. What if that thing you got wasn't just an object but an improvement in a subject or skill? And that improvement was at the level you wanted after you sacrificed your time and energy. You know you should be getting more credit for it. Or at least a simple congrats. But no. The people you told it to are treating you as if you just got something bad, or that you didn't put in enough effort, or they're just flat out unimpressed. If they're "nice", they may pat you in the back and tell you to try harder next time or give you 'the talk' (of boredom). What if it was someone you're close to? Someone you'd expect to be happy and celebrate with you on your achievement and if you're the insecure type, help you bring up your confidence by telling you that this achievement is a proof that you have what it takes and that you're on the right track. But they did otherwise. And somewhere in your head, you start to think that your efforts are unappreciated. Or that you just suck. Or that your achievements aren't worth acknowledging. Or all of above. Then you may start regretting and degrading your 'achievements' and feel low about yourself. Or you'd feel misunderstood, angry, insulted, disappointed and/or hateful.
If you can somehow relate to this, have you ever wondered why did you ever let that someone or some people be a killjoy? You have every right to be happy about your achievements no matter how small or big it is. Who are they to tell you to feel otherwise? They don't know what happened behind the scenes; they haven't the slightest clue what you did (if they did see you working, then they're probably just to dumb to comprehend what was happening in front of them). Can they understand how you feel? Or maybe they're just jealous. Think about it, why should you allow them to get to you?
You got what you want, aren't you happy?
(well, this post is more directed to myself that other people. Product of taking unfavorable events too seriously)
